What Athletic Directors Are Saying
Hear from athletic directors about their experience working with Daniel and DOC Advisory.
“I have known Daniel for many years through the independent school athletics community, and our professional relationship goes well beyond this recent experience with DOC Advisory. We first worked together through NYSAIS interscholastic athletics, and Daniel has consistently been a thoughtful and well-connected leader in our field. He also encouraged me to become involved with the New York State Athletic Administrators Association leadership community, including serving on the technology and innovation committee.
Daniel’s understanding of independent school athletics, combined with his extensive network and genuine investment in supporting athletic leaders, has always stood out to me. Having previously served as Athletic Director at UNIS, where Daniel later became Athletic Director, we also share a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing athletics departments in independent schools.
That longstanding relationship made it particularly easy to turn to DOC Advisory when we had an urgent coaching need. When we reached out about a Girls Varsity Tennis coaching position, Daniel immediately understood what we were looking for and moved quickly. Within 24 hours of our initial conversation, DOC Advisory had identified a strong candidate who aligned with our program, our students, and our expectations as a school.
The speed, professionalism, and quality of the support were exceptional. Daniel was able to leverage his knowledge of the independent school athletics landscape and his professional network to help us solve a time-sensitive hiring challenge efficiently and thoughtfully.
I would highly recommend DOC Advisory to schools and athletic departments looking for trusted, responsive, and results-oriented support with coaching recruitment and athletics leadership.”

“I have known Daniel for many years through the independent school athletics community, both as a colleague and through his involvement with the New York City Athletic League (NYCAL). Alongside his work as an Athletic Director at one of our member schools, he served the League in several leadership and operational roles, developing a strong understanding of interscholastic athletics at both the school and league levels.
As President of the NYCAL, I saw firsthand the impact of Daniel’s work. He combined technological expertise with a practical understanding of athletic administration to help the League become more organized, efficient, and responsive. He consistently identified opportunities to simplify processes, strengthen communication, and make better use of our resources.
Equally impressive was his ability to work with people. Daniel brought professionalism, patience, and a collaborative approach to his relationships with athletic directors, coaches, administrators, parents, and League leadership. He was approachable and dependable, listened carefully, and kept the focus on finding practical solutions.
Daniel is an honest, hardworking professional who takes pride in his work and follows through on his commitments. He cares deeply about the people and organizations he serves, and that commitment was evident throughout his contributions to the NYCAL.
I am grateful for the lasting improvements Daniel helped us make. I highly recommend Daniel and DOC Advisory to schools and athletics organizations seeking knowledgeable guidance, stronger systems, and a trusted partner who can turn ideas into meaningful improvements.”

“I have known Daniel O’Connor for five years, since we first connected at the NIAAA National Conference in 2022, where I was teaching a leadership training course. Through mutual colleagues and my own experience in New York City independent school athletics, we found common ground. I have since served as a mentor to Daniel as he has become increasingly involved in athletic leadership at the state and national levels.
Daniel brings extensive experience in physical education, coaching, and athletic administration, along with a clear commitment to improving the student-athlete experience. Before founding DOC Advisory, LLC, he elevated the athletic program at the United Nations International School through facility upgrades, expanded opportunities for students in grades 5–12, and effective management of the school’s largest departmental budget. He strengthened the program’s visibility through partnerships with Under Armour and BSN Sports and modernized its operations by introducing technology platforms. The program’s recognition with the NIAAA’s Quality Program Award is a testament to his leadership and professionalism.
His contributions extend beyond UNIS. Daniel serves as co-chair of Quality Program Accreditation for the New York State Athletic Administrators Association and Assistant Post-Season Coordinator for the New York State Association of Independent Schools’ Athletic Association. He previously served as secretary of the New York City Athletic League and holds the NIAAA’s Certified Master Athletic Administrator designation.
Daniel combines strategic insight with a welcoming, approachable manner. His experience, professionalism, and commitment to students make him a valuable partner for schools seeking to strengthen their athletic programs. I confidently recommend Daniel and DOC Advisory to school leaders looking for thoughtful guidance and practical recommendations.”

Through my work with Daniel in the NIAAA Quality Program Assessment, I saw firsthand his commitment to evaluating his program honestly, building strong systems, and creating an environment focused on continuous improvement. His school’s national recognition and Exemplary Status through the QPA process reflected the quality of his leadership and his commitment to education-based athletics. Daniel brings a rare combination of strategic vision, operational expertise, relationship-building, and a genuine passion for helping schools create athletic programs that serve students, coaches, and communities exceptionally well.”

What Educators and Coaches Are Saying
Hear from educators and coaches about their experience working with Daniel and DOC Advisory.
“I reached out to Daniel while looking for a fall coaching opportunity, and he quickly connected me with my current position. What stood out most was his personal commitment throughout the process. He followed up consistently and stayed involved until everything came together.
Daniel genuinely looks out for the coaches he works with. His support goes well beyond making an introduction, and I would highly recommend DOC Advisory to any coach looking for a dedicated advocate.”
Dwayne Jolly
Varsity Tennis Coach
“I had the pleasure of working closely with Daniel O’Connor during my time as Boys’ Varsity Soccer Head Coach at the United Nations International School. Daniel was not only an excellent Athletic Director, but also someone who made working together genuinely enjoyable.
Daniel is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and organized, but what I appreciated most was how approachable and supportive he was. Whether I came to him with a question, a challenge, or an idea for improving the program, he took the time to listen, understand what was needed, and work with me to find the right solution.
As a coach, having an Athletic Director who trusts you, supports your work, and understands what is required to build a successful program makes an enormous difference. Daniel created that environment while still maintaining high expectations for coaches and student-athletes. He gave his coaches the confidence and support to lead while ensuring that the experience and development of the students remained at the center of every decision.
Together, we were able to raise the expectations around the boys’ soccer program, giving our players stronger preparation, better resources, and opportunities to compete at a higher level. During my final season as Head Coach, we reached the NYSAIS state semifinal, and the following year the program continued that progression by reaching the NYSAIS state final. It was rewarding to see the standards and foundation we had worked to establish translate into sustained success.
One of the things I appreciated most about Daniel was that his support extended beyond what was best for his own program. When I was presented with an opportunity to move into college coaching during the season, Daniel supported me in taking the next step in my career. That meant a great deal to me. I later returned during the team’s run to the NYSAIS state final to support the players and coaches and help in any way I could. For me, that reflected the strength of the relationships and culture Daniel had helped create within the program.
I look back extremely positively on my time working with Daniel and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from him. He is an outstanding professional and, more importantly, a person who genuinely cares about the people he works with. I would welcome the opportunity to work alongside him again and would confidently recommend Daniel and DOC Advisory to any school or athletics organization looking to strengthen its program and support its coaches and student-athletes.

“I had the privilege of working closely with Daniel during his leadership at the United Nations International School (UNIS), both as a Physical Education teacher and athletics coach.
As Athletic Director and departmental leader, Daniel brought vision, clarity, and genuine encouragement to our team. He is an outstanding leader: supportive, organized, and deeply committed to bringing out the best in both his staff and student-athletes. Daniel created a culture of trust and empowerment, ensuring that we had the guidance, resources, and support needed to deliver high-quality programs and meaningful experiences for students.
Daniel also invested in the professional growth of his staff, giving us opportunities to take on greater responsibility, develop as educators and coaches, and contribute meaningfully to the direction of the department. His approachable and collaborative leadership style made him an absolute pleasure to work with. He was always willing to listen, provide thoughtful feedback, and take decisive, effective action when needed.
I have no doubt that any school or athletic department partnering with DOC Advisory will benefit tremendously from Daniel’s insight, professionalism, leadership, and commitment to helping programs and people reach their full potential.”
Ann van den Borne
Former UNIS Physical Education Teacher and Coach
“Daniel O’Connor genuinely cares about the people he works with and takes great pride in supporting the development of student-athletes, both on and off the field.
When Daniel approached me about building a strength and conditioning program at the United Nations International School from the ground up, it was his enthusiasm, clear vision and genuine belief in me that inspired me to say yes. Establishing a new program came with challenges, but Daniel championed it from the outset. Throughout my time at UNIS, he consistently supported me, my fellow coaches and our student-athletes. His commitment helped us introduce the program successfully and develop it into a meaningful part of the students’ experience.
What stood out most was Daniel’s focus on the bigger picture. His vision went beyond helping students perform better in their sports. He wanted them to move safely, reduce their risk of injury and experience exercise as something positive and rewarding. He understood that the confidence and habits students develop through physical activity can stay with them long after they leave school.
Daniel combines the vision to see what a program can become with the commitment to support the people who bring it to life. His belief in others is infectious, and his genuine care for both staff and students is at the heart of what makes him such an effective and inspiring leader.”

“I will always be grateful to Daniel O’Connor for giving me the opportunity to begin my basketball coaching career. Being part of his program opened doors for me, introduced me to great people, and helped me build relationships that have continued to support me throughout my career.
Daniel believed in me and gave me the chance to grow as a coach. He saw potential in me early on and trusted me with responsibility, which gave me the confidence and experience to keep developing. That eventually helped lead to an opportunity as an assistant coach at the college level. Throughout my career, he has consistently looked out for me and genuinely wanted to see me succeed. Whenever he had an opportunity to offer advice, make an introduction, or connect me with someone who could help me grow, he was always willing to do so.
What makes Daniel such an effective Athletic Director is that he genuinely cares about the people he works with. He understands that successful programs are built through attention to detail, strong relationships, and consistency. He also understands that meaningful change takes time and that building something the right way requires patience, commitment, and trust.
Daniel’s belief in me helped shape the direction of my coaching career, and his support has continued long after my time at UNIS. The confidence, opportunities, and relationships that came from working with him have had a lasting impact on both my personal and professional growth.”

““I first met Daniel O’Connor in 2022 when, as Athletic Director at the United Nations International School, he recruited me to help launch a table tennis program. I had recently retired and was not looking for work, but his vision inspired me to take on the opportunity.
From the outset, Daniel gave me the support and encouragement to build something lasting. We began with high school students, then expanded to middle and elementary school, creating a pathway for younger players to develop and progress. His approach reflected a clear commitment to the program’s long-term success.
We entered the Independent Schools Table Tennis League as a developmental team and reached the playoffs in our second season. Daniel helped make that progress possible by providing equipment, uniforms, transportation, and a dedicated space where students could train and parents could watch. He also supported ongoing recruitment, and our middle school program soon grew from an after-school activity into interscholastic competition.
Daniel continued to create opportunities beyond our regular season. He initiated and facilitated the first Mayor’s Cup held at UNIS, bringing the wider New York City table tennis community into our school. He also arranged scrimmages and friendly tournaments with schools beyond the city, including Albany, broadening our athletes’ experience.
Just as meaningful was his commitment to student leadership and family involvement. He encouraged older students to help coach younger players, giving them opportunities to develop as mentors. He welcomed parents as an essential part of the program and ensured that both students and families were recognized at our annual awards ceremony.
Daniel understands that a successful athletic program depends on the people, resources, and relationships behind it. I experienced firsthand his ability to bring those elements together with enthusiasm, thoughtful planning, and consistent support. Any school or athletics organization would benefit from his leadership and commitment to helping students and coaches succeed.”

What Student-Athletes Are Saying
Hear from student-athletes about their experience working with Daniel and DOC Advisory.
“I vividly remember when Mr. O’Connor became Athletic Director at UNIS. His care for student-athletes, vision for growth, and determination to build professional, well-resourced, and successful programs were evident from the start. During his tenure, we reached two state soccer finals in five years, having previously reached just one in the school’s history.
From investing in coaching staff and equipment to creating opportunities to compete against schools across New York State and beyond, Mr. O’Connor helped make being a student-athlete at UNIS an exceptional experience. His commitment was reflected in both the opportunities available to us and the support we received.
Some of my greatest sporting memories come from playing, and later coaching, under his leadership. Experiencing his approach as both an athlete and a coach gave me an even deeper appreciation for his professionalism, care, and vision. He consistently put the needs of student-athletes and coaches at the heart of his work, leaving a lasting impact on the programs and people he led.”

Former UNIS Boys’ Varsity Soccer Captain & Assistant Coach
Former NCAA Soccer Player
“I competed in Varsity Track & Field and Varsity Basketball throughout high school, along with one year of Varsity Soccer, and had the honor of serving as captain of both Track and Basketball for two years. When Mr. O’Connor took over as Athletic Director, I saw a clear shift in the culture and mentality of UNIS Athletics. He was consistently engaged with teams and captains, asking questions, seeking our feedback, and looking for ways to improve the student-athlete experience.
As a student-athlete, I could feel the difference in how our teams were run. There was more structure, higher expectations, and a stronger culture of commitment and accountability. Mr. O’Connor helped transform the athletics program across sports. We gained better equipment, improved training facilities, team apparel, and stronger competition on our schedules, all of which helped us develop as athletes. Being part of that transition made me proud to represent UNIS.
Serving as a captain under Mr. O’Connor also taught me a great deal about leadership. He held us to high standards while supporting us, and he made it clear that our voices, effort, and example mattered. The lessons I learned about accountability, teamwork, and taking ownership of a team have stayed with me well beyond high school.
Mr. O’Connor also played a direct role in my journey to becoming an NCAA Division III track and field athlete. He saw potential in me before I saw it in myself and encouraged me to give the sport a chance. His belief in me, the individual attention he gave his student-athletes, and his ability to challenge us while supporting us played an important role in the athlete and person I became. Without his encouragement, I may never have taken that first step.
I will always be grateful for the opportunity to compete under Mr. O’Connor’s leadership. Those years were some of the best of my life, and he helped create a positive, competitive environment in which student-athletes felt supported, challenged, and proud to represent their school. Any school or athletics program would benefit from his vision, leadership, and commitment to developing young people.”

“I have known Daniel O’Connor since seventh grade, when he was my Physical Education teacher at UNIS and also coached me on the Girls Middle School Basketball team. From the very beginning, Mr. O’Connor was incredibly encouraging and supportive. Throughout my time at UNIS, I saw firsthand the kind of leader he was and how much he valued engaging directly with students.
As Athletic Director, Mr. O’Connor brought tremendous energy and school spirit to UNIS Athletics. He made athletics feel like an important part of school life, celebrating teams and student-athletes and creating opportunities for the wider community to come together around sport. Under his leadership, there was greater excitement around games, stronger attendance, more school-wide athletics events and celebrations, improved team apparel, and greater recognition of student-athlete achievements.
He also made a real effort to give student-athletes a voice. The creation of the Student-Athlete Council gave students an opportunity to share ideas, provide feedback, and play a more active role in shaping the athletics experience. That helped create a stronger sense of ownership, connection, and belonging across the program.
I was a member of the UNIS volleyball team as a student, eventually serving as Girls Varsity Volleyball Captain, and after graduating I had the opportunity to return to the program as an assistant volleyball coach. Mr. O’Connor welcomed me back and gave me the opportunity to experience UNIS Athletics from a completely different perspective. Returning as a coach allowed me to see even more clearly the care, organization, and thought he put into creating a positive experience for both student-athletes and coaches.
I am extremely grateful to have known Mr. O’Connor as a student, athlete, captain, and coach. His leadership, encouragement, and commitment to building an inclusive and supportive athletics community had a lasting impact on my experience at UNIS and has stayed with me well beyond my time at the school.”

“I competed as a UNIS varsity tennis player throughout all four years of high school, becoming the first player in NYCAL history to qualify for the NYSAIS State Tournament. Throughout my journey, Daniel O’Connor consistently supported both me and the team. He actively sought our feedback, listened to our perspectives, and implemented our suggestions while continually looking for new ways to strengthen the program and improve the student-athlete experience.
What I appreciated most about Mr. O’Connor was the genuine attention he gave to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of student-athletes. He made us feel that our contributions mattered, whether we were competing at the highest level or simply working to improve each day. His encouragement motivated me to continue developing as a tennis player while also helping me grow in confidence and leadership.
With his support, I developed into a leader of the team during the final two seasons of my high school career. Mr. O’Connor created an environment where student-athletes felt comfortable sharing their ideas, taking ownership of their teams, and representing UNIS with pride. The lessons I learned through that experience about leadership, commitment, and supporting others have stayed with me well beyond my time at UNIS.”

“I had the opportunity to experience UNIS athletics under Mr. O’Connor’s leadership throughout both middle and high school. I began playing volleyball at UNIS in middle school and went on to compete at the varsity level for all four years of high school, eventually serving as team captain. During that time, I saw firsthand how much the athletics program grew and how the culture around being a student-athlete evolved.
Mr. O’Connor brought a new level of energy, pride, and school spirit to UNIS athletics. He made being a student-athlete something students were genuinely excited and proud to be part of, while also creating more opportunities for athletes to develop. From strength and conditioning programs to improved resources and greater support for teams, he consistently looked for ways to strengthen the student-athlete experience, help our teams compete at a higher level, and encourage us to take pride in representing UNIS.
As someone who spent so many years in the volleyball program, I was able to see that progress up close. My experience as a student-athlete at UNIS played a major role in shaping my love for volleyball, my development as a leader, and my appreciation for what it means to be part of a team.
Those experiences have stayed with me well beyond high school, and I am grateful for the impact Mr. O’Connor had on both UNIS athletics and my own journey as a student-athlete.”

“I competed in cross country, indoor track, and baseball at UNIS as a three-season athlete for several years. Before Mr. O’Connor arrived, we sometimes struggled to field the nine players needed for a baseball game.
Under his leadership, I witnessed a remarkable transformation in UNIS athletics. Investment in high-quality coaching, better equipment, and new teams went hand in hand with a shift in culture. Commitment became an expectation, supported by the resources and opportunities that helped student-athletes take their sports seriously.
As a student-athlete, those changes made me feel supported and proud to represent UNIS. Mr. O’Connor helped create an environment where our commitment mattered and we had the opportunity to grow.”

“Daniel O’Connor played an instrumental role in my development as a student-athlete, encouraging me to pursue cross country, track, and tennis throughout high school. His guidance and support helped me embrace new challenges and laid the foundation for my journey as an NCAA student-athlete. I am grateful for the lasting impact he has had on my athletic journey, from getting involved in high school sports to enjoying the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.”
Amoli Vad
Former UNIS Girls’ Varsity Tennis Captain
NCAA Tennis Student-Athlete Simmons University
“I competed for UNIS soccer throughout high school and had the privilege of serving as captain for two of those years. When Mr. O’Connor took over as Athletic Director, the athletics program reached a new level. We had proper pre-seasons, better equipment, stronger organization, and real structure behind every program. It stopped being about simply making do and became about giving student-athletes what they needed to prepare properly and compete at the highest level.
His leadership played a major role in the success we experienced. He was ambitious for the program and backed that ambition with action, advocating for stronger coaching, better fixtures, and meaningful opportunities to test ourselves against high-level competition. He was also hands-on in a way that is rare. He knew the players, understood where the team stood, and consistently showed up. As captain, I always knew he was in my corner, but he also held us accountable when we were not meeting the standards expected of us. Those conversations were an important part of helping us grow and ultimately reach the level we were capable of.
What stood out most was that he cared just as much about how we competed as he did about the results. Commitment, respect for opponents, and accountability to your teammates were non-negotiable. Winning followed from those values rather than replacing them.
My years playing high school soccer at UNIS gave me some of my favorite memories in the sport, and I will carry those experiences with me for a long time. Mr. O’Connor played a significant role in making that experience so memorable, and any school or athletics organization would be fortunate to have his leadership, commitment, and support.”

“I got to know Daniel O’Connor when my child joined UNIS. One of the first things that impressed me was the sports camp Daniel organized during the summer before my child started at the school. It gave my child the opportunity to make friends, get to know the staff, and become familiar with a new environment through sport. That early sense of connection and belonging made the transition to a new school feel much less daunting.
Over the years, I saw Daniel build a culture in which every child had a place, regardless of their ability or previous experience. Through athletics and whole-school events, he brought students and families together and helped create a warm, welcoming community. His impact extended well beyond sport; it was about helping children feel confident, connected, and that they genuinely belonged.
I was equally impressed by Daniel’s commitment to pastoral care. His concern for students went far beyond providing sporting opportunities or building community. He took a genuine interest in their well-being and was someone who cared deeply about the individual child. That combination of leadership, empathy, and personal investment distinguished him as an educator.
As a parent, I greatly value Daniel’s ability to use sport as a vehicle for building confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging. I would wholeheartedly recommend him to any school seeking to develop an inclusive athletics program while strengthening the wider school community.”

What Vendors Are Saying
Hear from vendors about their experience working with Daniel and DOC Advisory.
“I had the opportunity to work closely with Daniel for many years during his time leading athletics at UNIS. As his BSN SPORTS representative, I worked with him on virtually every aspect of his department’s equipment, uniforms, apparel, and athletic needs. We spoke almost daily, so I had a unique opportunity to see firsthand how Daniel operated as a leader.
Daniel was one of the most forward-thinking athletic directors I have worked with. He was always looking ahead, anticipating what his department, coaches, and student-athletes would need next rather than simply reacting to what was in front of him. He had a clear vision for where he wanted his athletics program to go and was constantly looking for ways to improve the experience for his community.
What impressed me most was Daniel’s ability to combine big-picture thinking with strong operational execution. Whether we were discussing a major uniform order, equipment needs, budgets, program growth, or finding ways to improve the department, he was organized, strategic, and incredibly intentional in his decision-making.
Daniel also understood the importance of relationships. He built strong partnerships with vendors and community partners while always advocating for what was best for his school and student-athletes. He was demanding when necessary, but always professional, collaborative, and respectful.
Having worked with hundreds of athletic directors and school leaders, I can say that Daniel stands out. He brings a rare combination of strategic vision, operational expertise, relationship-building, and an ability to stay one step ahead of the needs of an athletics department.
I have continued to stay in touch with Daniel since his time at UNIS, and I would have no hesitation recommending DOC Advisory to any school or athletics organization looking for an experienced, forward-thinking leader who understands how to build and improve high-performing athletics programs.”

“I first got to know Daniel as a Gipper customer and partner, and it quickly became clear that he brings a fresh perspective to athletic leadership. He is ambitious, forward-thinking, and focused on finding solutions, always willing to question established practices and explore what could work better.
What stands out most is his understanding of the bigger picture. Daniel sees a strong athletic department as an opportunity to create meaningful experiences for student-athletes, expand access to sport, and strengthen the entire school community. He pairs that vision with the practical experience and determination to turn ideas into action.
Daniel is exactly the kind of leader I would want in the room when shaping the future of an athletic department. He brings the perspective to see what is possible and the commitment to help make it happen.”

“I had the pleasure of working closely with Daniel on the development of a new athletics logo and broader visual identity for the school. From the beginning, Daniel approached the project with a clear vision for what he wanted the athletics program to represent and how the brand could better reflect the school community.
What stood out to me was Daniel’s understanding that an athletics brand is about much more than a logo. He saw the opportunity to create a consistent identity across teams, uniforms, facilities, communications, and the overall student-athlete experience. He was thoughtful about the details while always keeping the larger vision in mind.
Daniel was also an excellent partner throughout the creative process. He was engaged, collaborative, decisive, and open to ideas, while always maintaining a clear sense of direction. He pushed the project forward and made sure that the final product reflected the identity and aspirations of the athletics program.
His approach was consistent with what I saw throughout our work together: Daniel was always looking for ways to elevate the program, strengthen its identity, and create something that would have a lasting impact on the school community.
Daniel is a forward-thinking athletics leader who understands the importance of investing in the complete athletics experience, from strategy and operations to culture, communication, and brand identity. I would highly recommend DOC Advisory to any school looking to strengthen and modernize its athletics program.”
